The Path to Osteopathic Medicine

An osteopath is a medical doctor who specializes in treating, managing and even preventing a variety of health issues through the use of manual manipulation andOsteopathic Medicine massage. Osteopathic care is an alternative therapy that focuses on improving how everything in the body functions, from muscles and tendons to soft tissue and ligaments. Making sure that everything works together properly and efficiently is the purpose of an osteopath.

Osteopathic medicine can help improve function, mobility and range-of-motion while also enhancing multiple systems within the human body, from the nervous system to the circulatory. So, what exactly goes into becoming an osteopath? What should a professional osteopath be able to offer you when it comes to their training and education?

Since an osteopath is a doctor they have to complete an osteopathic medical school program for four years. After successfully completing school they then have to complete and pass their licensure exam. Upon passing the exam the next step is to undertake an internship and residency program. This hands-on experience also allows osteopaths to learn different clinical specialties so that they can decide which kind of approach or approaches they want to take when practicing medicine.

Depending on the specialty on which they want to focus, residency programs can last up to eight years. Some osteopaths will continue to get more specialty training after their residency if they want to specialize in more than one osteopathic field. Before choosing an osteopath that suits your needs, make sure that they are fully licensed and have successfully completed a residency program.

All osteopaths will need to complete continuing education hours in their field of study in order to renew their license. Continuing education is a great way for medical professionals to keep up with the most up-to-date treatment options and techniques to provide clients with the proper and most advanced osteopathic care possible. If in doubt, be sure to ask your osteopath about the specialty training they’ve received in order to choose the doctor that’s right for you.

If you have questions about osteopathy and how it could improve your physical and emotional wellbeing then it’s time to call your osteopath and schedule an appointment. You might be surprised to learn about the many ways in which osteopathic medicine could boost your health.
